In the U.S., tourism is the country's largest service export, responsible for a $26 billion trade surplus. Tourism is currently the country's third largest retail industry, employing 68 million directly and an additional nine million indirectly.
With its expansive growth, 300,000 new jobs are created each year in the U.S. alone, offering enormous opportunities for career development. In California, travel and tourism spending amounts to $75.4 billion annually, providing employment for more than 1 million Californians in hotels, restaurants, and tourism providers.
In 2001, California's share of the domestic travel market was 11.6%, making it the most visited state in the U.S.
